Why do different BaZi calculators give different results?
When websites or AI tools give different BaZi results, the discrepancy often begins before interpretation: how the birth time is converted and how the pillars are calculated. Compare the eight characters before comparing conclusions.
How a BaZi result is produced
| Step | What it does | Signs of a problem |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Prepare the birth time | Resolve time zones, daylight saving and true solar time | A different Hour Pillar |
| 2. Calculate the Four Pillars | Use solar terms for year and month, determine the day and assign the hour | A different Year or Month Pillar |
| 3. Analyze the structure | Calculate Ten Gods, elemental strength and luck cycles | Different strength or useful-element assessments |
| 4. Write the reading | Turn the analysis into prose | Different wording for the same result, or excessive certainty |
An error early in the process affects everything that follows. If two tools do not even agree on the eight characters, comparing their readings is premature.
Five common causes
- Changing the Month Pillar on lunar day one or the first of a calendar month instead of a solar-term boundary.
- Failing to remove the extra hour for a birth during China's 1986–1991 daylight-saving periods.
- Omitting or differing in solar-time conversion, especially for a birthplace far from 120° east when using Beijing standard time.
- Using different day-change conventions for a birth between 11 pm and midnight.
- Calculating the starting age or direction of luck cycles differently. Under the convention described here, direction depends on the Year Stem's yin–yang polarity and sex.
Common problems in AI-written readings
Even with a correct chart, language models may turn possibilities into certainties, treat a symbolic term as a concrete event—for example, declaring a move this year from Travel Horse alone—or mix BaZi with unrelated systems such as Zi Wei Dou Shu or sun signs.
A careful reading should explain which chart features and rules support each interpretation, and what the chart cannot establish.
How to check for yourself
- Compare the eight characters first. If they differ, set aside the conclusions and review the birth time and place.
- Double-check births near a solar-term transition, during daylight saving or around 11 pm.
- Treat interpretations as possible tendencies and perspectives. Ground important decisions in real circumstances.
