Can you calculate BaZi without knowing your birth hour?
Without the hour, the year, month and day still provide three pillars and six characters. They offer a Day Master and a partial elemental picture. Leave Hour Pillar matters uncertain rather than inventing a time.
What can and cannot be read
| Topic | Without a known birth hour |
|---|---|
| Year, Month and Day Pillars | Usually calculable; births around 11 pm are an exception discussed below |
| Day Master | Can be identified from the Day Pillar |
| Elemental strength | Broad patterns remain visible, but two missing characters limit the conclusion |
| Ten Gods combinations | Many remain visible |
| Hour Pillar topics, such as children and later life | Cannot be assessed from the missing pillar |
| Ten-year luck cycles | Can be calculated, though the starting age may differ by several months |
| Purple Star Astrology | Cannot be cast because the Life Palace depends on the birth hour |
An exception: births around 11 pm
If all you know is that the birth was in the evening, take special care: Zi hour starts at 23:00. Under many schools' conventions, that period uses the following day's pillar, which also changes the Day Master. Compare the candidate Day Pillars when this is uncertain.
Why not just enter an arbitrary hour?
Some people enter midnight or noon by default. A wrong Hour Pillar does not merely leave information missing; it adds misleading information. It can affect the assessment of elemental strength and useful elements, changing the direction of a reading. Leaving it unknown is preferable to guessing.
Ways to narrow down the time
- Ask parents or older relatives. Even memories such as before sunrise, after lunch or before dark can narrow the range to a few double-hours.
- Check birth certificates, hospital archives, old diaries or notes on photographs.
- If you have a limited range, compare charts for the candidate hours against major past events, such as education, moves or marriage. This practice is called birth-time rectification; its result remains a hypothesis.
- Select the unknown-time option when calculating here to use three pillars; Hour Pillar content will be omitted from the result.
