2026 The Bing-Wu Year: Understanding the phrase “Red Horse, Red Sheep”
2026 is Bing-Wu: both the Bing stem and Wu branch belong to Fire, and Wu is the Horse. This double Fire symbolism gives rise to “Red Horse.” Its traditional interpretation varies with each person’s BaZi chart.
What does Bing-Wu year mean?
In the stem–branch calendar, 2026 is Bing-Wu (丙午): Bing is Yang Fire, and Wu is also Fire and corresponds to the Horse. Both stem and branch therefore emphasize Fire in the traditional system.
In traditional elemental color symbolism, Bing Fire is associated with red and Wu with the Horse, hence the name Red Horse year. The following year, 2027, is Ding-Wei: Ding is also Fire and Wei is the Goat, giving the name Red Goat year.
In BaZi, the Bing-Wu year begins at the Li Chun transition on February 4, 2026 and ends at the next Li Chun transition on February 4, 2027. It does not begin on January 1 or Lunar New Year.
What is the “Red Horse, Red Goat calamity” story?
Folk tradition sometimes portrays Bing-Wu and Ding-Wei years as turbulent under the phrase “Red Horse, Red Goat calamity.” This arose from attaching historical events to those year names. It is not a basis for chart calculation and cannot determine whether an individual’s year will be good or bad.
What does this year mean for my chart?
The same annual pillar has different meanings in different charts. First identify which Ten Gods Bing Fire and Wu Fire—whose main hidden stem is Ding Fire—represent relative to your Day Master:
| Your Day Master | Bing Fire relative to you | Wu Fire relative to you |
|---|---|---|
| Jia (甲), Yang Wood | Eating God | Hurting Officer |
| Yi (乙), Yin Wood | Hurting Officer | Eating God |
| Bing (丙), Yang Fire | Companion (比肩) | Rob Wealth (劫财) |
| Ding (丁), Yin Fire | Rob Wealth (劫财) | Companion (比肩) |
| Wu (戊), Yang Earth | Indirect Resource | Direct Resource |
| Ji (己), Yin Earth | Direct Resource | Indirect Resource |
| Geng (庚), Yang Metal | Seven Killings | Direct Officer |
| Xin (辛), Yin Metal | Direct Officer | Seven Killings |
| Ren (壬), Yang Water | Indirect Wealth | Direct Wealth |
| Gui (癸), Yin Water | Direct Wealth | Indirect Wealth |
Next, check whether Wu Fire has particular relationships with the branches in your chart:
- Zi (子) in the chart: the Zi–Wu clash traditionally symbolizes change, movement or disrupted plans.
- Yin (寅) or Xu (戌) in the chart: the Yin–Wu–Xu three-harmony Fire combination emphasizes Fire.
- Wei (未) in the chart: the Wu–Wei combination traditionally suggests closer involvement and cooperation.
- Wu (午) in the chart: Wu–Wu self-punishment traditionally symbolizes emotional fluctuations or self-imposed strain.
How to approach the year
- If Fire is favorable in the chart, the traditional emphasis is on expression, visibility, exploration and actively pursuing opportunities.
- If Fire is unfavorable, the traditional advice is to attend to rest and emotions, avoid overexertion and notice symptoms described as “excess heat” (上火).
- Treat sweeping statements such as “good luck all year” or “clashes all year” as folklore, not conclusions to apply directly to yourself.
- Annual readings describe tendencies, not a timetable. Base important decisions on your actual circumstances.
