Introduction to symbolic stars: Peach Blossom, Travel Star, and Canopy

Symbolic stars (神煞) are derived from particular Earthly Branch combinations in a BaZi chart. Peach Blossom symbolizes sociability and charm, Traveling Horse movement and change, and Canopy solitude and artistic interests. They supplement a reading and cannot support conclusions on their own.

What are symbolic stars?

Symbolic stars (神煞) are traditional categories identified by fixed stem–branch combinations. They do not enter the calculation of elemental strength; they add descriptive detail to the main BaZi analysis. Within this symbolism, otherwise similar charts may associate Peach Blossom with social presence, Traveling Horse with movement, and Canopy with solitary study.

There are hundreds of symbolic stars, but only a small number are commonly used. This article introduces three familiar examples.

How to find them

Start with the year or day branch and identify its three-harmony group: Shen–Zi–Chen, Yin–Wu–Xu, Si–You–Chou or Hai–Mao–Wei (申子辰、寅午戌、巳酉丑、亥卯未). Find the corresponding branch in the table. If it occurs elsewhere in the chart, the symbolic star is present under this convention.

Si, You, Chou (巳、酉、丑)Wu (午)Hai (亥)Chou (丑)
Hai, Mao, Wei (亥、卯、未)Zi (子)Si (巳)Wei (未)

Example: in 己卯、丙子、戊午、戊午, the day branch Wu (午) belongs to Yin–Wu–Xu, whose Peach Blossom is Mao (卯), present in the year branch. Starting instead from the year branch Mao gives the Hai–Mao–Wei group, whose Peach Blossom is Zi (子), present in the month branch. Both reference points therefore identify Peach Blossom.

What the three stars symbolize

  • Peach Blossom (桃花): sociability, charm, aesthetic interests and a wish to express oneself or attract notice. It concerns popularity as well as romance.
  • Traveling Horse (驿马): movement, business travel, relocation, changing jobs and going abroad. A prominent Traveling Horse traditionally symbolizes a life with more movement and change.
  • Canopy (华盖): solitude, reflection and interests in art, religion, philosophy or specialist subjects, sometimes with an independent or aloof disposition.

Points to keep in mind

  • Read the Five Elements and Ten Gods first, then use symbolic stars for detail. Do not reverse their importance.
  • A star’s prominence depends on the strength of its branch and whether it is clashed or combined. In traditional interpretation, a clashed Peach Blossom suggests unstable connections, while a combined Traveling Horse suggests movement being tied up or delayed.
  • The same star is interpreted differently depending on its Ten God and whether that element is favorable. Peach Blossom on a favorable element may symbolize good social connections; on an unfavorable one, distraction through relationships or social obligations. The same principle applies to Traveling Horse and Canopy.
  • Names and lookup conventions vary across periods and books. The same star name may be calculated differently in different sources.
