BaZi luck cycles: how they are set, when they start and how to read them

Luck cycles, or Da Yun, are the ten-year backdrops of a BaZi chart. They are derived from the Month Pillar and run forwards or backwards depending on gender and the polarity of the birth year. This guide covers the direction rule, how the starting age is calculated, a complete worked example of eight cycles, and how cycles and annual pillars are read together.

What a luck cycle is

The chart fixed at birth, the natal chart, never changes; it is like a person's base colour. Luck cycles are the changing environment as life moves on: from a certain age, a new stem-branch pair takes over every ten years, usually listed for eight to ten steps. The natal chart describes who you are; the luck cycle describes the season you are living through for that decade.

Step one: forwards or backwards

Start with the polarity of the Year Stem: Jia, Bing, Wu, Geng and Ren are yang; Yi, Ding, Ji, Xin and Gui are yin. Then combine it with gender:

Born in a yang yearBorn in a yin year
MaleForwardsBackwards
FemaleBackwardsForwards

Forwards means counting on through the sixty-pair cycle from the Month Pillar; backwards means counting back. With a Bing-Zi Month Pillar, the next step forwards is Ding-Chou and the next step backwards is Yi-Hai. This is why a BaZi calculator asks for gender.

Step two: the starting age

Luck cycles do not begin at birth; first you work out the starting age. For a forward chart, count from the moment of birth to the next jie, the solar term that opens a month; for a backward chart, count back to the previous one. The jie are the twelve month-opening terms among the twenty-four, such as Li Chun, Jing Zhe and Qing Ming.

Convert the gap into an age using the traditional ratio: three days equal one year, one day equals four months, and one double-hour (two hours) equals ten days.

Starting ages therefore vary from under one year to almost ten. Someone born close to a solar term starts very early.

A worked example

Year Pillar己卯
Month Pillar丙子
Day Pillar戊午Day Master
Hour Pillar戊午
Natal chart: born at 12:00 noon on 1 January 2000 (China Standard Time)

The Year Stem Ji is yin. A male chart born in a yin year runs backwards; a female chart born in a yin year runs forwards.

Second cycleJia-Xu (甲戌)Wu-Yin (戊寅)

Sixth cycleGeng-Wu (庚午)Ren-Wu (壬午)
Seventh cycleJi-Si (己巳)Gui-Wei (癸未)
Eighth cycleWu-Chen (戊辰)Jia-Shen (甲申)

Taking the male chart: cycles start at about eight, so the first, Yi-Hai, covers roughly 2008 to 2018 and the second, Jia-Xu, roughly 2018 to 2028, and so on. A boy and a girl born on the same day have completely different luck cycles.

How to read a luck cycle

  • Work out its Ten Gods relative to the Day Master. For the Wu Earth Day Master above, the Yi-Hai cycle brings Direct Officer (Yi) and Indirect Wealth (Hai), so the decade leans towards rules, responsibility and resources.
  • Ask whether it brings the favourable elements. This chart is heavy in Fire and Earth and benefits from Metal and Water, so the third and fourth male cycles, Gui-You and Ren-Shen, would traditionally be seen as a more supportive twenty years.
  • Check for clashes and combinations with the natal branches; these often coincide with change or turning points.
  • A common saying holds that the stem governs the first five years and the branch the last five. Schools differ, and it is safer to read each cycle as a whole.

Reading cycles and annual pillars together

The annual pillar is the stem-branch of the year itself; 2026, for example, is Bing-Wu. If luck cycles are the seasons, annual pillars are the weather: the same rain feels different in spring and in winter. To read a given year, first find which cycle it falls in, then look at how the annual pillar, the cycle and the natal chart interact.

Common misconceptions

  • One cycle decides a whole decade: a cycle is an environment, and what people do within it varies enormously.
  • Reading the cycle without the natal chart: the same cycle means different things for different charts.
  • Assuming the year a cycle changes brings trouble: the change can be noticeable, which is a reason for attention, not a forecast of misfortune.
